Another day at the 2022 U.S. Open, another opportunity for someone — anyone — to pull away from the field in the fourth and final round.
The Country Club was notoriously difficult on Saturday, with only seven golfers scoring under par on moving day. Consider how brutal the course Brookline was on Saturday, using Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm as examples:
Morikawa came in as the 36-hole co-leader at 5 under but carded a 7-over par 77 (including two double bogeys) to fall to 2 over for the tournament and out of contention. Scheffler took a two-stroke lead Saturday at 6 under — courtesy of a fantastic fairway eagle on Hole 8 — but double-bogeyed the 11th and bogeyed on the 12th, 13th and 14th. He ended the round at 2 under for the tournament.
Then there was Rahm, who overcame a slow start to birdie 14, 15 and 17 and take the outright lead at 5 under. Naturally, he double-bogeyed 18 to fall a stroke behind the leaders.

The conditions only stand to get more perilous after overnight rain in the Boston area. And after Saturday, who can say what will happen next?
Two of the seven golfers to score under par Saturday themselves atop the 54-hole leaderboard at 4 under: Will Zalatoris and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick, both of whom are still looking for their first major championship, shot 67 and 68 in Round 3, respectively.
It’s all setting up for a crazy finish. Follow along as The Sporting News provides live updates and highlights of the final round of the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
