Kontaveit has continued her ascent up the WTA rankings in 2022. She began the year ranked seventh and reached No. 2 on June 6. She dipped to third near the end of June, but only for a week. Despite her ranking, Kontaveit has not found much success in Grand Slam singles. She advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2020 Australian Open but has never moved past the fourth round in any other Grand Slam event.

She failed to get past the second round in her trips to the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year, and she lost in the first round of the French Open.
