Madden Super Bowl predictions 2023: Video game projects Eagles vs. Chiefs to be a blowout

The Chiefs and the Eagles are set to meet on Sunday to determine the champion of Super Bowl 57.

But EA Sports’ popular “Madden” video game believes it already knows which team is going to emerge victoriously.

It’s easy to make a case for either side. The Eagles have one of the best and deepest rosters in the NFL and are built to get pressure on Patrick Mahomes. They also have a rock-solid, balanced offense that contains within it few — if any — holes.

As for the Chiefs, their roster isn’t as strong, but there’s no denying that Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL right now. He is playing in the Super Bowl for the third time in the last four years and will do so with one of the NFL’s best coaches, Andy Reid, by his side.

Sportsbooks believe this game to be a tossup of sorts, as the Eagles are slight, 1.5-point favorites across the board.

Does Madden 23 agree with that analysis, or is it picking the underdog this season? Here’s a look at the popular video game’s prediction for Super Bowl 57, as well as its accuracy in predicting winners over the last two decades.

Madden is projecting that Super Bowl 57 will be a blowout. It has the Eagles beating the Chiefs 31-17 to give Philadelphia its second Lombardi Trophy.

The preview didn’t show too many specific plays, but it appeared that the Eagles were able to do two things particularly well in this contest. They were to limit Patrick Mahomes in the passing game while taking advantage of the Chiefs’ young cornerbacks on their own.

Mahomes was accurate in the simulation but otherwise had one of his worst games of the season. He completed 29 of 39 passes but totaled just 249 yards during the contest; his yards-per-attempt average of 6.38 marked his lowest of the season.

Even more troubling, Mahomes was only able to throw for one touchdown while also tossing a pick to C.J. Gardner-Johnson. That disparity allowed the Eagles to pull away in this contest thanks to a stellar effort by their receivers.

Madden didn’t reveal Jalen Hurts’ stats for the contest in its official prediction, but top receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith each had strong games. Brown racked up 114 yards on eight catches. That included a deep-ball touchdown during which he outjumped Chiefs rookie Trent McDuffie to get into the end zone.

That wasn’t the only touchdown scored against McDuffie. The 2022 first-round pick also was covering Smith when the second-year receiver was able to make the catch over the smaller defender.

The biggest bright spot for the Chiefs’ defense was that its top defensive lineman, Chris Jones, was able to rack up two sacks of Hurts. So, maybe Kansas City won’t be as overmatched in the trenches as initially anticipated.

Even still, the Eagles’ 14-point margin of victory marks the second-largest ever predicted in an official Madden Super Bowl simulation. The largest came in 2005 — EA’s second year releasing a projection — in a game that, ironically, also featured the Eagles.

Philadelphia lost that simulation 47-31 to the Patriots. The Eagles were, in fact, defeated in Super Bowl 39, but they kept it much closer in a 24-21 loss.

Madden Super Bowl predictions history

The “Madden NFL” franchise has made an official Super Bowl prediction every year since the 2004 Super Bowl. It correctly picked the Patriots to beat the Panthers by a field goal in that contest.

Since its inception, the Madden Super Bowl simulation has posted a record of 11-8 in its straight-up Super Bowl predictions. However, it has gone just 1-4 in the last five Super Bowls — including last year’s simulation, which picked the Bengals to beat the Rams 24-21 — so the Eagles may want to temper their expectations.

The Madden Super Bowl simulation predicted the exact outcome once in its history. That came in Super Bowl 49, when the Patriots beat the Seahawks 28-24 in the famed Malcolm Butler interception game.
