LSU vs. Florida State live score, updates, highlights from Week 1 college football game

Week 1 of the college football season rolls on on Sunday with a primetime matchup between traditional powers LSU and Florida State.

Both teams are looking for a revival of sorts, with new coaches at the centers of those respective storylines. LSU is looking for a relatively quick turnaround — having won a title as recently as 2019 — with Brian Kelly. He left Notre Dame as the Fighting Irish’s winningest coach with the hope of finally winning a national championship, a goal the Tigers undoubtedly share with him.

At Florida State, Mike Norvell is hoping Year 3 will see a huge jump after leading the Seminoles to 3-6 and 5-7 seasons in 2020 and 2021, respectively. He has yet to experience the kind of success he had at Memphis, where he led the Tigers to two double-digit-win seasons in three years.

Third quarter: Florida State 10, LSU 3

9:38 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, Florida State. The Seminoles don’t tempt fate this time, going for the easy points. Fitzgerald hits it from 25 yards to give the Seminoles a 10-3 lead with 8:29 left in the third quarter.

9:38 p.m.: Mekhi Garner high-points a ball and bats it with his finger tips, potentially preventing a touchdown. Strong defensive back play in the red zone.

9:37 p.m.: Travis has Johnny Wilson on the corner route but good protection prevents the over-the-shoulder touchdown.

9:35 p.m.: Travis connects with Johnny Wilson for a huge catch-and-run in which the receiver bounces off a would-be tackle and gets more than enough for the first down. That’ll go down as a 24-yard gain to the LSU 20.

9:33 p.m.: Travis hits Lawrance Toafili on the slip screen for a nice 10-yard gain on third-and-6. FSU gets a new set of downs at the LSU 39.

9:30 p.m.: Tough sledding for Ward, who runs for 4 yards on second-and-4 to get a first down. Seminoles driving now at their 47.

9:29 p.m.: Travis fakes the handoff, rolls left and hits Ontaria Wilson for a quick 12-yard gain to the 37-yard line.

9:28 p.m.: We’re back at it, with Florida State taking the ball first.

9:05 p.m.: And there’s Verse to answer in turn: He gets a 12-yard sack of Daniels, ending this half essentially.

9:04 p.m.: LSU takes its last timeout of the half, and looks like it’s paying off. Daniels gets a nice 15-yard run out to the LSU 31-yard line with 56 seconds left.

9:01 p.m.: Turnover on downs, Florida State. Wow. Norvell’s gamble doesn’t pay off. Travis tries to hit Mycah Pittman with a corner route, and the receiver has it drop off his hands. Strong stand by the LSU defense.

9 p.m.: Strong defensive effort by LSU to bring up fourth down. Hard count coming from the Seminoles?

8:58 p.m.: Muffed punt recovery, Florida State. Malik Nabers calls for the fair catch but muffs the punt! Wyatt Rector jumps on the ball and gives Florida State fantastic field position at the LSU 16-yard line.

8:57 p.m.: LSU finally gets off the field on third down after Travis’ long pass falls incomplete. Punt team upcoming.

8:51 p.m.: Fantastic pocket presence by Travis to avoid the pressure and extend the play with a scramble to the right. He hits Ontaria Wilson for 9 yards on third-and-8 from FSU’s 22.

8:47 p.m.: Blocked field goal! Albany transfer Jared Verse slices through the line and blocks Ramos’ 30-yard field goal!

8:45 p.m.: Daniels targets Boutte on a what appears to be a perfect throw, but the receiver doesn’t run his route well or get his head around in time. What could have been a first down catch or touchdown falls incomplete.

8:45 p.m.: False start on Cameron Wire brings up third-and-11 from the FSU 13.

8:43 p.m.: Green slams Daniels with a form tackle on a gain of 2.

8:39 p.m.: Daniels to Jaray Jenkins for a first down to the FSU 11. Tigers can get a first down without a touchdown here.

8:38 p.m.: That’s three straight runs by Daniels of 11, 7 and 8 yards. He has eight carries for 66 yards so far.

8:38 p.m.: Daniels didn’t like what he saw and scrambled for the first down. FSU’s Green converged on him but didn’t have the angle, tackling him only after he had crossed the line to gain.

8:36 p.m.: A Daniels completion to near the line to gain is going to be negated by a holding call on LSU’s Kole Taylor. Tigers also had an ineligible receiver downfield.

8:33 p.m.: Now it’s on LSU to answer back. That starts with a second-down connection between Daniels and Brian Thomas Jr. for 16 yards to the 50-yard line.

8:31 p.m.: On that drive, Florida State drove 85 yards on 14 plays, converting four third downs. Impressive stuff.

8:27 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, FLORIDA STATE. The Seminoles break out the razzle dazzle with a reverse flea-flicker! Travis finds a wide-open Ontaria Wilson for a 39-yard touchdown! Seminoles lead 7-3 with 13:00 left in the second quarter.

8:26 p.m.: Travis again converts, this time with a keeper off left tackle. Looks like he got another yard. First-and-10 coming up from the 37.

8:25 p.m.: Treshaun Ward takes it 5 yards on second-and-7 to open the second quarter. Third-and-2 upcoming.

First quarter: LSU 3, Florida State 0

8:19 p.m.: Another third down, another conversion for Travis: this time on a 3-yard catch to Deuce Spann on third-and-2. Seminoles driving at the LSU 48.

8:18 p.m.: Again Travis gets the key completion on third down, this time finding Mycah Pittman for a 6-yard gain on third-and-4. That moves the ball to the Seminoles 42.

8:15 p.m.: Timeout, LSU (2:54).

8:14 p.m.: Travis finds McDonald in the soft spot of the LSU zone for a 13-yard gain on third down. Seminoles driving at their 29.

8:11 p.m.: Daniels gets sacked on third down with Dennis Briggs Jr. finally landing the hit on him. Three-and-out for the Tigers on their second drive.

8:05 p.m.: Fitzgerald’s kick misses just right; not a great start for the kicker, but it’s still early. Tigers will take over at their 29.

8:04 p.m.: Travis rolls right and evades pressure but can’t hit his receiver on the run. Now it’s up to FSU’s kicker to get the Seminoles on the board with a 47-yard attempt.

7:58 p.m.: Holding penalty negates another big run by Florida State. No matter: Travis takes a keeper up the left side and gets 23 yards on first-and-20 to the Tigers’ 29.

7:57 p.m.: And now Travis rolls right and finds Johnny Wilson for a 21-yard gain to the LSU 42.

7:57 p.m.: Travis finds Cameron McDonald for a 12-yard gain on third-and-7 to move the chains. Seminoles get a fresh set of downs at their own 37.

7:54 p.m.: Now it’s Florida State’s turn, which takes over at its 25 following a touchback.

7:51 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, LSU. Damian Ramos knocks it straight down the center for 36 yards to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 11:41 left in the first quarter.

7:50 p.m.: Daniels moves up in the pocket then rolls right, where FSU’s Kalen DeLoach closes in and nearly tackles him for a loss. Daniels instead throws it away.

7:49 p.m.: Garrett Dellinger, making his first start as a center, snaps the ball over Daniels’ head. The quarterback simply falls on it at the 19, bring up third-and-goal from there.

7:48 p.m.: Sophomore running back Armoni Goodwin busts a 9-yard run through a huge hole up the middle. Tigers have first-and-goal from the 7-yard line.

7:47 p.m.: Again with a Daniels scramble. He sidesteps a would-be sack and rushes for 9 yards to the 16.

7:47 p.m.: Daniels goes for it all in the end zone, but Kayshon Boutte can’t bring it down. Not bad coverage by Akeem Dent to break that touchdown pass up.

7:45 p.m.: Daniels wastes no time showing off his athleticism. He breaks contain and busts a 25-yard scramble up the left sideline to the opposing 40. Add a late hit out of bounds by Renardo Green to tack on 15 more yards. Tigers already at the Seminoles 25.

7:44 p.m.: Ryan Fitzgerald kicks it out of bounds, giving LSU great field position at its own 35.

7:43 p.m.: LSU wins the toss and elects to receive. Won’t have to wait long to see Daniels take over at quarterback.
