Giants star wide receiver reveals legendary new jersey number

New York Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers has revealed his new jersey number.

The No. 6 overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft has been wearing No. 9 throughout the spring workouts, training camp and the preseason.

However, the rookie wideout announced he’ll be wearing No. 1, which is a big surprise considering the fact that it hasn’t been worn in almost 90 years.

In doing so, the Giants had to unretire the number from Ray Flaherty. It’s significant because Flaherty’s number was the first to be retired in Pro Football history.

Nabers sought and received permission from the Flaherty family in order to wear the jersey number.

“Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants. I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. Canโ€™t wait for the season to start,” Nabers said in a statement through the team.

Nabers is expected to be an incredible asset for the Giants right away in an offense that needs a catalyst from the wide receiver room.
