Now that the Detroit Lions have set their initial 53-man roster, the team will look to the waiver wire and free agency for any recently cut players who they believe can help them shore up holes on either side of the ball.
But not only will the Lions be looking for players to add to the 53-man roster, they will also be filling out their 16-man practice squad. Detroit can begin signing free agents to the practice squad, but they will have to wait until Wednesday for those players who are subject to waivers.
Players who were cut by other teams and have four or more accrued seasons are available immediately in free agency. Players with three or less accrued seasons will go through waivers first before hitting free agency.
After Tuesday’s cutdown deadline, the Lions and the rest of the teams around the NFL have until noon ET on Wednesday to submit waiver claims. The Lions figure to be active on either the waiver wire or free agency, mostly because they desperately need to add to the wide receiver position.
