study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Untreated vision loss and high levels of LDL cholesterol have been linked to a greater chance of developing the common dementia type.<\/p>\n<p>Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is sometimes called &#8220;<span class=\"waslinkname\"><u>bad cholesterol<\/u><\/span>,&#8221; is associated with negative health effects when present in high amounts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"waslinkname\"><strong><u>HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND ALZHEIMER\u2019S DISEASE COULD GO HAND IN HAND, STUDY FINDS<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Researchers from University College London led the study, published in The Lancet on Aug. 10.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were also presented at the Alzheimer\u2019s Association International Conference (AAIC) in cholesterol join a list of 12 other risk factors the researchers previously identified in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Those 12 are <span class=\"waslinkname\"><u>hearing loss<\/u><\/span>, lower education, smoking, hypertension, obesity, physical inactivity, depression, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, air pollution, traumatic brain injury and social isolation.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"waslinkname\"><strong><u>AI FAST-TRACKS DEMENTIA DIAGNOSES BY TAPPING INTO \u2018HIDDEN INFORMATION\u2019 IN BRAIN WAVES<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To identify the two new risk factors, the researchers analyzed dozens of recent studies on vision loss and high cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p>The 14 total factors are responsible for roughly half of dementia cases globally, the researchers class=\"waslinkname\"><u>physical exercise<\/u><\/span>, can be managed by changing your lifestyle, but many must be addressed on a societal level,&#8221; Fiona Carragher, chief policy and research officer at the Alzheimer\u2019s Society in the U.K., said in a press release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(The study was partly funded by the Alzheimer&#8217;s Society.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social isolation, education inequalities and air pollution are beyond individuals\u2019 control and require public health interventions and joint action between government and industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quote\" readability=\"8\">\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;I tell patients all the time, \u2018if it\u2019s healthy for the heart, it\u2019s healthy for the brain.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Earnest Lee Murray, a <span class=\"waslinkname\"><u>board-certified neurologist<\/u><\/span> at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee, was not involved in the study but said it &#8220;substantiates a lot of things we have known about dementia for several years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He told Fox News Digital, &#8220;The study in Lancet shows higher levels of LDL (the bad cholesterol) \u2014 which is often related to <span class=\"waslinkname\"><u>diet and lifestyle choices<\/u><\/span> \u2014 is related to a greater chance of developing a diet modifications can be beneficial as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The neurologist was also not surprised by the link between vision loss and development of dementia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"waslinkname\"><strong><u>ALZHEIMER\u2019S AND PARKINSON\u2019S RISK IS HIGHER FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY FAT IN TWO SPECIFIC AREAS<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have known for years that patients who have <span class=\"waslinkname\"><u>higher levels of education<\/u><\/span> and are \u2018well-read\u2019 often develop dementia at a much later age,&#8221; Murray said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We rely heavily upon eyesight to be able to engage in our surroundings as well as stimulate cognitive thought.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reducing the risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In his practice, Murray said, he is often asked about ways to prevent or reduce the risk of developing dementia at a later age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Patients have a good understanding of what a <span class=\"waslinkname\"><u>heart-healthy diet<\/u><\/span> and lifestyle look like,&#8221; he told Fox News Digital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-ct inline\">\n<div
