Mets reportedly lied about Juan Soto skipping fan event: 'Terrible look'

Did the New York Metsโ€™ public relations team lie about Juan Soto over the weekend?

The Mets hosted their โ€œAmazinโ€™ Dayโ€ fan event at Citi Field on Saturday โ€” a yearly tradition designed to give Mets fans early access to players and autograph sessions ahead of the new season.

However, one huge aspect was missing from this yearโ€™s Amazinโ€™ Day: Juan Soto.

After signing a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets in December, Soto is the one guy on every Mets fanโ€™s mind these days, and his appearance at Amazinโ€™ Day would have been met with mania.

Unfortunately, Soto was unable to attend the event due to flight difficultuies, according to the Metsโ€™ PR.

Sounds understandable enough.

Or maybe not. On Tuesday night, Major League Baseball blogger Dan Clark expressed a gripe with the Mets for what he asserts was a PR lie pertaining to Sotoโ€™s absence at Amazinโ€™ Day.

โ€œFor those unaware, Juan Soto skipped the Mets’ Amazin’ Day event because wanted to attend Game 7 of the LIDOM C’ship Series,โ€ Clark said.

โ€œThis is despite the Mets PR team saying it was due to “flight difficulties”. This is a terrible look for both parties, so early in the piece. Bad start!โ€

LIDOM is a massively popular pro baseball winter league in Sotoโ€™s native Dominican Republic. Surely, Soto would be excused from a fan event to attend one of the most important sporting events of the year in his home nation, removing any need for the cover up alleged by Clark.

Itโ€™s unclear whether Clarkโ€™s accusations are accurate. Itโ€™s possible that Soto attended LIDOM and planned on also attending Amazinโ€™ Day but was prevented from doing so by flight delays.

All in all, it sounds like it was a slow news day in Metsland. And by the way, whether or not itโ€™s right, PR teams are sort of designed to cover up things all of the time. Is that โ€œlyingโ€, or is it media spin to protect a player?

Soto and his $765 million couldnโ€™t care less.
