Ex-Titans GM Jon Robinson resurfaces as candidate for general manager job

Since he was fired as the Tennessee Titans‘ general manager in 2022, we haven’t heard much from Jon Robinson. We’ve seen him resurface as a guest at the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ minicamp, but that’s been about it.

Well, until now โ€” according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Robinson is going to get a look for the New York Jets‘ general manager vacancy and is expected to get an interview this week.

“Sources say New York will conduct interviews this week with several GM candidates, including former Titans GM Jon Robinson,” Pelissero wrote.

Robinson began making his climb toward being the Titans’ general manager back in 2002, when he took a job as an area scout with the New England Patriots. From there, Robinson saw promotions all the way up to director of college scouting.

Robinson was then hired as the director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he spent three seasons before becoming Tennessee’s general manager in 2016.

After taking over a 3-13 team, Robinson and the Titans had four straight 9-7 seasons, with two of them ending with a trip to the playoffs, and one of those postseason trips ended in the AFC Championship Game (2019).

Tennessee then graduated to winning the division two years in a row but could not win a playoff game in either of those campaigns and then saw a steep decline in 2022 that led to Robinson getting fired during the season.

That decline was rooted in several bad decisions. Robinson whiffed on many draft picks and free-agent signings from 2020 on. And, in what was his biggest gaffe, Robinson traded away A.J. Brown, something Titans fans still aren’t over.

But Robinson’s brutal ending in Nashville overshadows a lot of the good he did. He was responsible for drafting former franchise stalwarts like Kevin Byard and Derrick Henry, and his 2019 draft class produced five starters, including Brown and Jeffery Simmons, both of whom are stars.

We’ll see if Robinson gets his shot at redemption in New York.
