Blue Jays trade proposal cuts ties with $33 million All-Star for a top prospect

The Toronto Blue Jays missed on Juan Soto and could struggle to keep their star players in Toronto. They could look to deal some of their best players before they walk in free agency.

While answering questions from fans for the Athletic, MLB Insider Jim Bowden proposed this trade that ships Bo Bichette to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for multiple prospects:

  • Blue Jays receive: shortstop Colt Emerson or shortstop/second baseman Cole Young
  • Mariners receive: shortstop Bo Bichette

The Mariners already have J.P. Crawford signed to play shortstop through 2026. Bichette would likely be asked to slide over to third base. The Blue Jays’ desire to add a big league-ready bat to the corner of their infield could make Emerson or Young expendable. They are the Mariners No. 1 and No. 2 prospects according to MLB Pipeline.

“The Mariners are willing to trade some of their top prospects for a major-league-ready first- or third-base bat, so Toronto might be able to acquire either Colt Emerson, 19, or Cole Young, 21, for Bichette, which they should consider given that he’s under contract for only one more year,” wrote Bowden. “Bichette would play third base for Seattle.”

Bichette had a down season in 2024, but history shows that it may be an outlier. He was an All-Star in 2021 and 2023. He led the American League in hits in 2021 and 2022. He had a .225 batting average in 2024. Before last season, he had a .299 batting average. He has not played anywhere except shortstop in the big leagues, but the Mariners would certainly move him from shortstop.
